Ruellia are hardy and half hardy perennial sub shrubs that reach from 30 to 90 cm in height. There main blooming period is from Spring to summer, but many Ruellia will also carry sporadic flowers at later times of the year. The flowers of Ruellia are wide ranging in size but are usually tubular in shape. A common name for Ruellia is Wild Petunia. Beloved by many gardeners for its heat tolerance and shade-loving nature, but reviled by others for its eagerness to spread with abandon.
Light:
Purple showers love full sun, but grow well in partial shade. The more sunlight they receive, the more flower they produce. These plants enjoy summer warmth and even survive a drought.
Temperature:
They don’t do well in the cold. The temperature 70 to 82°F (21-28°C).
Water:
The best approach is for watering just enough to keep the soil consistently moist. While these plants are sturdy and can go without water for a long time, young petunia ruellia simplex needs regular watering.
Fertilizer:
These plants grow well without an additional boost of fertilizers. If you still want to feed your plants, a tablespoon of 10-10-10 fertilizer is enough.
Soil:
For optimal growing conditions, use a well-draining fertile soil. Also, consider the pH level of the soil. These plants tolerate alkalinity but usually do great in neutral or slightly acidic soil.
How to Propagate Ruellia:
This plant can self-seed aggressively. During the rainy season or when hosed with water, the seeds can be ejected to up to 10-feet away. It propagates well on its own through seeds. These plants also propagate through cuttings.
