Thuja is a small genus belonging to the group of conifers and to the family of Cupressaceae. It is native to North America and Asia. Light:

Soil:
Thuja grows in most soil types. But the best soil for it is fertile soil that has ability to retain moisture. It also tolerates very chalky soils.
Water:
The plant does best in consistently moist but not soggy soil. So, keep the soil well-moist always, and water the plant deeply whenever topsoil feels dry to touch.
Fertilizer:
Fertilize with manure twice a year. Also, give liquid fertilizer every month.
Pruning:
It doesn’t require pruning as it naturally grows in columnar shape. Although if you are growing this for hedge prune regularly to maintain shape. It can tolerate excessive pruning without any problem.
Temperature:
20 to 35 degree Celsius its good for this plant.
Propagation From Cutting
- Snip off a 5-6 inches long cutting right below the set of needles during the summers since branches of this plant are firm yet flexible during this timespan.
- Trim off the needles from the lower one-third of the cutting and apply rooting hormone to the cut portion.
- Take a pot and fill it with sterile potting mix. You can even take a mixture containing equal parts of peat moss and river sand.
- Plant the cutting in the potting soil deep enough to keep the stem upright.
- Moisten the soil well and wrap the container with plastic to retain moisture and warmth inside.
- Place the container at any bright place but away from direct sunlight. The cutting grows best around the 20 C temperature.
