People have been growing aloe vera plants for literally thousands of years. It is one of the most widely used medicinal plants on the planet. Aloe vera is one of the best plants you can grow to help maintain your health and wellness. It is easy to care for, propagates quickly, and will thrive in a variety of conditions. Aloe vera plants are capable of growing to six feet tall, but the average height usually ranges from one to three feet.
Water:
The soil of the aloe vera plant should be allowed to go completely dry before being watered.
Fertilizer:
You can fertilize your aloe vera plant, but aloes generally don?t need to be fertilized. If you decide to add fertilizing to part of your aloe vera plant care routine, aloe vera plants should be fertilized once a year in the spring. You can use a phosphorus-heavy, water-based fertilizer at half strength.
Light:
Aloe Vera plants require plenty of sunlight to thrive. If you live in an area with more than six hours of direct sunlight per day then you should grow these Aloe Vera varieties:
Soil:
Good potting soil that is well-drained and nutrient-rich will make your plants thrive and look healthy.
Temperature and Humidity:
Aloe grows naturally in arid, tropical, and semi-tropical environments, so mimicking these conditions will allow it to thrive. Aim for a temperature between 55 and 85 F (most indoor environments can achieve this).
Aloe can handle dry air just fine and does not require extra humidity. Forty percent relative humidity is perfect.
Pruning:
Aloe vera needs pruning only if the leaves are shriveled and dead. You can also prune those damaged by environmental factors. If the outer leaves of your aloe vera plant go brown at the tips, cut them back, as well.
Propagating Aloe Vera:
- Gather gloves, a trowel, a pot, and a cactus potting medium.
- Put on your gloves and fill the pot with potting mix.
- Locate the pups at the base of the mother plant. Using a trowel, pry up a pup and sever the taproot that connects it to the mother.
- Lay the pup flat and dry it in a sunny window for a few days to allow any broken cuts to callus over.
- Plant the pup in the pot, taking care to cover any roots.
- Water the plant and place it in a sunny window. It may take three to four months to grow roots. Be patient.
