Product Description:
Ruffled fan palms are an unusual but gorgeous species of palm. Ruffled fan palm is native to the Vanuata Islands which is located off the coast of Australia. It is a very slow growing palm and can reach up to 10 feet (3 m), but usually closer to just 6 feet (1.8 m) when grown in a pot. They are grown for their beautiful pleated, or ruffled, leaves. The plant is used in ornamental purposes and have large, circular, simple, undivided and closely pleated leaves, giving it its name as Fan palm. The plant needs moderate watering and grows well in full to partial sunlight, making it an excellent choice as a decorative houseplant.
Light:
The evergreen tabletop palm grows in partial shade or even full shade, which makes it a fixture in malls and office buildings. In fact, bright, direct light may cause the leaves to dry out.
Water:
The Licuala Palm does well with infrequent, deep watering. Allow the top couple of inches of the soil to dry and then water thoroughly. Mist the plant two or three times a week to keep humidity levels comfortable.
Soil:
Vanuatu Fan Palm is tolerant of all sorts of soil at any pH level, as long as it is well-draining. A mixture of rich organic compost, humus, and sand is ideal. A sandy soil works well.
Fertilize:
You can either give it a diluted dose of liquid fertilizer once a month during the growing season or give the plant a full dose of a slow-release fertilizer once early in the spring and a couple more times through the summer. An NPK rating of 15-5-10 is best.
Pruning:
Remove yellow or dying leaves, and plant debris to encourage better-growing conditions. While pruning, always use clean utensils or shears to reduce the chance of bacterial and fungal diseases.
