Product Description:
Pygmy date palm, the botanical name Phoenix roebelenii is a small to medium-sized palm originating from the Yunnan Region of Chine, Laos, and Vietnam. It is a slow-growing palm that reaches a height of 6-20 feet when grown outdoors with a canopy that spreads about 10 feet wide. These palms are perfect for growing in containers and make excellent patio plants. They are also widely cultivated as landscape accents. They have attractive pinnately-arranged leaves that can grow quite large given the proper care. The trunk is usually single-stemmed, but clustered trunks can sometimes develop.
Light:
Robellini palms require as much as possible, ideally at least six hours of direct sunlight each day.
Soil:
Robellini palms prefer moist, but well-drained soils. Robellini palms require soil that is acidic to slightly alkaline.
Water:
These palms should be watered regularly so that the soil never dries out completely.
Fertilizer:
Fertilize with manure twice a year. Also, give liquid fertilizer every month.
Temperature:
The ideal temperature for Pygmy Date Palms is 50-75°F (16-24°C). A Phoenix Roebelenii does not do well when temperature go below 50°F (10°C).
Humidity:
Like most palm trees, the robellini palm requires warm, humid conditions.
Pruning:
There are sharp spines at the base of the leaflets on the fronds of a Phoenix Roebelenii, be sure to wear gloves when pruning off old fronds.
Propagating Robellini Palms:
A Dwarf Palm is propagated using the suckers that develop around the base of the plant. Cut off the suckers, including their roots, and plant them in a small pot to start a new plant.
