Travelers to the tropics are no doubt familiar with the Pandanus or screw pine. These plants are frequently seen growing just inland from the sea, in boggy or wet areas, or along streams or riverbanks. Pandanus Pine is fast-growing and will need plenty of room. Even young plants quickly grow a trunk, with leaves spiraling upward. Those arching, creamy yellow-and-green striped leaves will eventually grow up to 3 ft (90 cm) long. It’s a good idea to set your plant where it won’t be brushed against. As plants mature, they’ll develop aerial roots. In their native seaside habitat, those stilt roots help to anchor plants from strong winds.
Light:
Pandanus thrives in dappled sunlight to direct sunlight. In the summer, non-acclimated plants should not be exposed to direct sunlight to prevent scorching. In the winter, provide as much light as possible.
Water:
Pandanus can be drought-tolerant, especially when they get a little bit older. However, plants with a regular supply of water are better off, with more attractive leaf coloration and vigor.
Soil:
A rich, peat-based potting soil with excellent drainage is beneficial.
Fertilizer
Feed with a weak liquid fertilizer throughout the growing season. Cut fertilizer back to once a month or so in the winter.
Humidity:
Give this tropical native at least 50% relative humidity all year. Homes can become extremely dry in winter. The most efficient way to boost humidity for tropical plants is with a cool mist humidifier.
Temperature:
Average to warm (65-80°F/18-27°C) year-round. Keep Screw Pine away from cold drafts, including A/C vents.
Propagation:
If you want to propagate the plant, wait until the plantlet is about 6 inches long, then remove it by cutting as close to the main stem as possible. Treat with a rooting hormone for the best chances of success and provide with plenty of warmth.
