Light:
Low to moderate light. Keep this showy Calathea plant out of direct sun to avoid dulling the colors of the leaves.
Water:
Keep mix evenly moist at all times, but not soggy. Use distilled or rain water because Peacock Plant is sensitive to fluoride.
Humidity:
Requires moist air (aim to maintain 60% relative humidity around the plant). Set pot on a tray of wet pebbles and mist leaves frequently with room-temperature water. If indoor air is extremely dry during the winter months.
Temperature:
Average to warm room temperatures 70-85F/21-29C
Humidity:
Its ideal humidity level is between around 50% to 60%.
Soil:
Peat moss based potting mix.
Fertilizer:
Feed monthly with a balanced house plant fertilizer diluted by half spring through fall. Do not feed in winter.
Propagation:
- Carefully remove the plant, using extra caution when handling the roots.
- Loosen the soil and separate the new growths.
- The rhizomes you separate should have two or three good-sized stems.
- Place the divisions in individual pots and lightly press the soil.
- Cover each pot with plastic, but make sure that there are holes for ventilation.
- Set the pots in a warm, shaded area for several days.
- Remove the plastic cover and water the new plants.
Pruning:
The good news is, you don’t need to prune it often. But, it is a good idea to do so when its gets too bushy. This will allow you to control its shape and look. Remove any brown or yellow leaves as well as those have gotten damaged.
