Betel leaf plant (piper betel) is a creeper grown in India. It belongs to the pepper family. Its waxy green, heart-shaped leaves are used for medical and culinary purposes. When crushed, it exudes cool peppery scent. Its used in making a famous dessert called Paan. This healthy herb is suitable to grow in containers and in hanging baskets. However, since it originates from Asia.
Soil:
For betel leaf to grow and thrive fast, it requires an acidic, sandy and lightly damp soil. If you are growing this herb in a container, betel leaf prefers a deep container than a wide one.
Light :
Betel leaf plants require partial shade.
Water:
Water thoroughly in the summer and reduce watering in winter and rainy season.
Temperature and Humidity:
With its origin in India, the paan plant is a tropical creeper, growing well in the humid and warm climate of most Indian states. Temperature ranging from 10-30 C is good for its growth.
Plants Care:
Since it is native to Asia, betel leaf prefers a warm climate. If the temperature falls to 41F degrees and under in winter, it is better to bring the plant indoors. You should place it in a warm area and for better results, you could use grow lights.
Propagation of betel leaf plant:
The plant is propagated through cuttings; the cuttings should have one or two nodes with attached leaves. Furrows should be constructed, before planting the cuttings. The furrow width should be 50 cm. On the ridges, 2 – 3 rows. Use a sharp knife to make a 45-degree cut beneath the leaf node. The bud vines should be planted along with the mother plant at a distance of 10 -15 cm.
